Rainy Day Wedding

If there is one concern most wedding clients have, it is rain on their wedding day! For Elisabeth Millay and I, this was a blessing in disguise at the wedding of Kristin and Charlie this fall. I was happy to come along to help out on this rainy wedding because we had a very daring bridal party and Elisabeth is like the postal service; through rain, wind and snow, she’ll deliver! We had a great time running around the golf courses of the North Jersey Country Club, which is now one of my favorite places to work! You’d be surprised how most venues treat wedding vendors and the good people at North Jersey were an absolute joy to work with. Thanks to Kristin and Charlie, to this really beautiful venue, and to Elisabeth for having me along!

On the Marina

As I take some time in the next week or so to blog the unbloggged weddings, I’m starting to realize just how many there are! Its really rewarding to be able to go back and remember all of the fun details and sweet couples I’ve had the chance to shoot for this year both for myself and with some of my talented colleagues. Below is the wedding of Christina and Chad at Marina del Rey, right on the water. I got to hang out with Chad in the morning, who is a chef in Manhattan, and his really adorable dog who is pictured. Now that the year is over and Valentine’s Day is looming, I’m taking some time to blog the many beautiful 2009 weddings you haven’t seen yet! So first up, this beautiful colorful wedding of Rhian and Garrett at Blue Hill at Stone Barns on Halloween! The ring bearers weren’t the only ones gorging on candy! The couple had a mix of their favorite candies from all over the world as favors. Thanks to Elisabeth Millay for having me along on this one!

I was so honored to photograph the wedding ceremony of long time couple, Tiff and Colleen, who recently had an intimate and laid-back marriage ceremony at Gillette Castle in Connecticut. Then a few days later, we had brunch in Manhattan and walked around in the snow to take some more portraits! I’m looking forward to photographing Tiff and Colleen’s baby, who is due this March!

Valentine’s Boudoir

Valentine’s Day is either a holiday we try to ignore, or we try to celebrate and end up disappointed at feeble Hallmark-ish gifts and sentiment. To be honest, I’ve never been a big fan. Not because I am unromantic, but because it can be mind-numbingly cheesy and generic. I saw an Ellen von Unwerth exhibit this past weekend and was immediately inspired by a true artist’s ability to draw out personality we didn’t know we had and angles we haven’t seen; adding that mystery back into our visual record. Isn’t it time you shook things up a bit?

Candy Slice Comedy

Recently I had the opportunity to photograph the hilarious ladies of Candy Slice, a NYC all-female comedy troupe of eight who met in the improv program at the famous Upright Citizen’s Brigade Theater and named their group after late comedian and SNL-star Gilda Radner’s “Candy Slice & The Slicers.”

The troupe performs their monthly variety show, “Up Late With Candy Slice,” in Manhattan, and their self-produced videos have garnered over a million hits on YouTube, including their very own behind the scenes spoof of the Beyoncé and Lady Gaga video for “Video Phone” (which also appeared on Perez Hilton):

The most amazing thing about that video? They wrote the parody BEFORE the actual “Video Phone” video was released! They’re obviously oracles. (Also, does anyone else think that Beyonce totally ripped off MIA’s look in that one shot? You know which one I’m talking about.)

In the era of Tina Fey, Wanda Sykes, Amy Poehler and Kristin Wiig, Candy Slice is an example of a growing trend of confident, funny ladies taking over the comedy scene.

For the shoot, I had the help of talented wardrobe stylist, Sara Medd, who brought the bright threads, accessories, and lots of sweet props. We listened to Gaga, played with hair fans, and ate a lot of candy. See the full interview here.

My first wedding of the new year was at the beautiful St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral and the intimate Soho Grand North Loft on January 2nd, 2010. The couple’s dog Coco was the ring bearer and the wedding was attended by about 30 of their close family and friends. I was happy to have Michelle Arlotta helping me for the day! Thanks to Jill and Mark for allowing me the honor to photograph their wedding.
